About Radio Free Abattoir

Since 1999, the award-winning Radio Free Abattoir (RFA) has featured the best new dark alternative music from artists around the world. Specializing in music from the gothic, industrial, darkwave, EBM, synthpop and related genres, RFA is the oldest and most-popular on-demand, Internet-only, dark alternative web cast on the planet.

RFA has been the recipient of numerous award and honors over its history, including:

  • Microsoft: RFA has been on the Windows Media Radio Tuner since the show's inception in May, 1999. (And that's not long after the tuner's inception!)

  • Microsoft: In April, 2005, RFA was one of ten "featured stations" on the Windows Media Radio Tuner, alongside "piddly" broadcasts like NPR & MSNBC. That's the shit, baby. Can you handel 4000 listeners a day? We can. :-)

  • Microsoft: In November, 2005, RFA was listed as an "Editor's Pick" on the Windows Media Radio Tuner.

  • iM Networks: They may not be around any longer, but they were one of the leaders in channeling Internet radio to home audio equipment. They honored us with their "Best of Planet" award. We miss you iM!

  • SoMusical.Com: Even though they can't sort out our listing on their web site, they think that we're the "Top Site" in the Gothic genre across the entire Internet. Damn straight we are!

RFA's history originates in London, England, where Sam Bradford ('SamSam') founded the show. An American abroad, a longtime club DJ and a lifelong geek, Sam left the London gothic club scene to focus on presenting new gothic and dark alternative artists from around the world to the world. RFA was more of a hobby than an institution until 2004 when Sam returned to the USA after 10 years of being an expatriate.

In 2005 Sam incorporated "The SlagHuis" and RFA became a commercial enterprise with compilation CD releases, a members' area, an MP3 download service, merchandise and more. Unfortunately, Sam couldn't do it all in the summer of 2005, RFA expanded yet again. But this time... as a family. Read more about our staff by clicking their names below.
